"Having just refreshed our “Changing Lives” five year strategy, we are now looking to appoint a new Chair with the vision and passion to lead the organisation through the ongoing transformation that lies ahead."

Duncan Hames, Non-Executive Director

The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is a truly exceptional and cutting edge organisation.

Innovative and entrepreneurial, our scope is unique because it is built on three major foundations: care and treatment, science and research, and training. Everything we do is to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve, and to promote mental health and wellbeing for all.

All of this work is only possible through the dedication of our 4,800 staff, who work tirelessly in exceptionally challenging services, to provide outstanding care to our service users and the communities we serve. We are proud to have been rated as “Good” by the CQC in our most recent inspection, and this is a testament to the high quality of care our staff provide.

We operate across more than 90 sites across south London including the historic Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital, providing not only core mental health services to our four local boroughs, but over 50 specialist mental health services nationwide, including the National Psychosis Unit and the National Autism Unit.

Our world renowned brand has enabled us to expand internationally, and we have partnered with the Macani Medical Centre to launch Maudsley Health in the Arab Emirates, as well as developing services in Al Amal psychiatric hospital in Dubai. We are looking to develop Maudsley Health further to expand our alternative delivery model to drive investment in services for patients. Even more crucially, we are part of the South London Mental Health and Community Partnership, a collaboration between Oxleas NHS FT, South West London and St. George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and ourselves, and between us we deliver services to over 3 million people.

We are at the very forefront of mental healthcare delivery, and partnerships are a hugely important part of the way we operate. From our long standing role in the Academic Health Science Network of King’s Health Partners and our partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, through to the newly developed and highly innovative Lambeth Alliance and One Croydon Alliance that are both revolutionising the way joined up care is delivered, these partners are crucial to our ongoing work

Having just refreshed our “Changing Lives” five year strategy, we are now looking to appoint a new Chair with the vision and passion to lead the organisation through the ongoing transformation that lies ahead. Continually improving quality in a financially challenged local health and social care system is no easy task, and we are under no illusions to the challenges we face, and the leadership we need to do so. We need someone with the empathy to be able to collaborate with our partners and service users, the vision and courage to help drive new opportunities for the Trust, and most importantly, someone who is utterly dedicated to improving care for our service users and communities.

Please have a look at the information on this microsite, and discuss the role with our search partner, Melanie Shearer of GatenbySanderson. If you have been inspired to help lead us on our journey to support our communities, then we would very much look forward to receiving your application.
