Welcome from Sir Norman Lamb

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is an organisation on an exciting journey of transformation to provide the best possible services to our local communities and nationally.

We are committed to tackling health inequalities, driving change to improve people’s lives and experiences. Everything we do as a Trust is to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve and to promote mental health and wellbeing for all - locally, nationally and internationally. Benefitting from world-class research and innovation and a world-renowned brand, our biggest asset is our passionate and highly-skilled workforce, who are dedicated to providing the highest quality care to the people who use our services, often in challenging circumstances.

Our organisation cannot provide quality care without equality. We want our organisation to be the best mental health trust in the country – known not only for the excellent services we deliver to people but for how staff support and value each other as equals.

Respecting human rights and treating people with dignity must define our every interaction with people who use our services, their families and carers, and with our own staff. This must include reducing the disparities faced by people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, who form a significant proportion of the people using our local services. As a Trust, we want to be known for our action on anti-racism and this will be a golden thread throughout all our work.

Operating across more than 90 sites, including Bethlem Royal Hospital, Maudsley Hospital, Lambeth Hospital and the Ladywell Unit, we provide a staggering range of services, ranging from core mental health services in our local boroughs, to addiction and rehabilitation services, and more than 50 specialist mental health services across the UK, including a Mother and Baby Unit, an Eating Disorders Unit, a National Psychosis Unit and a National Autism Unit.

We are rated ‘Good’ overall by the Care Quality Commission, including for the ‘Well Led’ domain. With our strong commitment to working in partnership with our service users, carers and local communities, and to quality improvement, we believe we are capable of delivering truly outstanding services across all our teams. We know that we will only achieve this if the Trust truly is a great place to work, where all our staff feel valued, developed and supported. We want our next Non-Executive Directors to work with both the Board of Directors and the Council of Governors to make this vision a reality.

We are now seeking to appoint a Non-Executive Director, to build on the Trust’s success and strengthen the pursuit of its vision, putting patients at the heart of everything we do.

We are committed to tackling discrimination and embracing diversity across our organisation, we would particularly welcome applications from people who have a protected characteristic. We would particularly welcome applications from people with experience of mental illness or of caring for someone with a mental illness; from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds; and from different socio-economic, age and educational backgrounds.

Please have a look at the information in this pack and discuss the role with our search partner, GatenbySanderson. If you believe that you are the person we are seeking for this important role of Non-Executive Director, we would very much look forward to receiving your application.

Sir Norman Lamb
Chair, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
